The vision behind Nyaal Banyul
What drew you to this opportunity, and what’s your vision for the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre in the long term?
What attracted me to Nyaal Banyul was the opportunity to be part of something truly transformative. This venue isn’t just a new events space — it’s a game-changer for Geelong and the broader business events industry.
We’re creating a world-class gathering place that not only delivers premium events but also embodies sustainability, accessibility and a deep connection to place and culture. My vision is to see Nyaal Banyul establish itself as a world-leading destination for business events, setting new standards in innovation, hospitality and community impact.
Shaping the regional and global events landscape
As the new Centre is still under construction, how do you see it shaping the events landscape in the region, and what role do you envision it playing in the global business events industry?
Nyaal Banyul will elevate Geelong as a serious player in the business events space. With its stunning waterfront location, cutting-edge technology and adaptable spaces, it will attract a diverse range of events—from national conferences to global industry summits.
We’re positioning Geelong as an exciting alternative to capital city venues, offering all the advantages of a major event centre with the added benefit of a vibrant region rich in cultural diversity, natural beauty and a strong sense of community.
Internationally, we aim to set benchmarks in sustainability and First Nations engagement. Our collaboration with the Wadawurrung Traditional Custodians has been integral from the very beginning, ensuring Nyaal Banyul is not just a place for gathering but a venue that honours Country. The name Nyaal Banyul—meaning open your eyes to the hills—was gifted by the Wadawurrung People, and their insights have shaped everything from architectural design to storytelling and landscaping.
A new standard for event innovation
The Centre’s opening in 2026 is a key milestone. Can you share some of the strategic plans and innovations you’re excited to introduce when the venue opens its doors?
We’re embracing the latest event technology to create seamless hybrid and in-person experiences, ensuring accessibility and connectivity for all attendees. Sustainability is also a major focus—we’ll be a fossil fuel-free site, generating 38% of our own energy and operating with a sophisticated waste diversion system.
Another key innovation is the inclusion of sensory rooms, ensuring a truly inclusive experience for all guests. With the adjacent 200-room Crowne Plaza hotel, event planners will have a complete precinct offering, making Geelong an even more attractive destination.
Backed by experience, grounded in place
With the Victorian Convention and Event Trust appointed to operate the venue, how do you plan to leverage their expertise to ensure the Centre’s success, and what unique aspects will it bring to the local and international event scene?
As operators of Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, the Victorian Convention and Event Trust brings a wealth of experience and an outstanding global reputation, which will be instrumental in positioning Nyaal Banyul as a premier event destination. We’ll leverage their deep industry connections, operational expertise and strategic insights to ensure best-in-class service.
At the same time, we’re ensuring Nyaal Banyul retains its own identity — one that is distinctly Geelong. We’ll work with local suppliers, offer boutique service and tailor every event to each client’s vision.
Building sustainability into the venue
Sustainability is a growing concern in the events industry. How will the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre address sustainability, and what innovative features will the venue incorporate to lead in this area?
Sustainability is embedded into every aspect of Nyaal Banyul. We’re setting a new standard by becoming a fossil fuel-free venue, with rooftop solar panels, battery storage for uninterrupted power, and a waste management system featuring around 13 streams to minimise landfill.
Our menus will prioritise local and seasonal ingredients, reducing food miles and supporting regional producers. Our goal is to achieve a 5-Star Green Star operational rating and be a global leader in sustainable event venues.
We’re also encouraging delegates to stay longer and explore the Bellarine region. That not only supports local tourism but also helps offset long-haul travel emissions by making each trip more meaningful and connected to place.
For Geelong, with Geelong
How do you see the opening of the Centre benefiting the local community, and what opportunities will it create for regional businesses and the broader events ecosystem?
Nyaal Banyul will be a significant economic driver for Geelong. It will create jobs, boost tourism and provide opportunities for local suppliers — from food and beverage producers to event service providers.
We also want it to be a cultural hub. A place where locals gather, celebrate, and connect with thought leaders from around the world. This is more than just a convention centre. It’s a catalyst for growth, creativity and connection in the region.
