What’s in a Name? The Meanings Behind Our Spaces
By Bree Pagliuso|
At Nyaal Banyul, every space carries a story, and every name holds meaning. From Bundjil’s eye in Sky Country, the tongue of land Djilang is seen. The cliffs along Western Beach are more than just stunning natural features—they hold deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Wadawurrung People, whose connection to this land stretches back through countless generations.
Our venue name, Nyaal Banyul, meaning Open your eyes to the hills, was gifted by the Wadawurrung People . It calls us to slow down, look around, open our eyes to the hills of Wadawurrung Country, and truly see the beauty and significance of this place—a timeless reminder of the land’s stories and wisdom.
Spaces with stories
Every space at Nyaal Banyul has been thoughtfully named to reflect its cultural significance and purpose. These names honour the landscape, the animals, and the heritage of this remarkable place, creating a sense of belonging for everyone who enters.

Darrwal Rooms
From the word meaning dingo, the Darrwal Rooms honour a respected and spiritual animal that has walked alongside the Wadawurrung People since time immemorial. These interconnected, light-filled spaces encourage innovation and adaptability, making them ideal for larger gatherings where ideas can roam free.
