  Our approach to sustainability and impact

  Our vision is to be the world's trusted partner for delivering impactful events. We recognise that this impact extends far beyond our venues, to our people, businesses, suppliers and communities. Our Sustainability and Impact Strategy 2026-30 describes how we plan to build positive impact while addressing negative outcomes that we may influence.

  This strategy is focused on three interconnected priorities:

  • Environmental responsibility,

  • Social impact and

  • Economic prosperity.

  Together, they represent our commitment to operate resilient, inclusive and future-focused venues that contribute positively to our local regions.

• Progress to date

  Our progress

  Nyaal Banyul has been designed, built and operated with sustainability at its core. It holds a 5-star Green Star building certification, is powered by 100% renewable electricity via purchased and on-site solar generation, and has waste sorting infrastructure including an on-site organics dehydrator. We are committed to certify as a carbon neutral building through Climate Active in 2028.

  Nyaal Banyul is a pioneering achievement in Australia, standing as the first convention centre intricately designed in partnership with the Traditional Owners from its inception. Our name, meaning ‘Open your eyes to the hills,’ was generously gifted by the Wadawurrung People, inviting all who visit to experience the transformative power of discovery and connection.

  The building has also been designed using Universal Design Principles for accessibility. It is equipped with level access throughout, a Changing Places facility, sensory/quiet room and assisted hearing. Nyaal Banyul customer service is trained under the Hidden Sunflower Disability program.

  Reducing our environmental impact and strengthening VCET's climate resilience

  Nyaal Banyul relies heavily on the natural world to deliver impactful events and we acknowledge the considerable environmental outcomes we have. Our venue and events use large amounts of electricity and water to operate and we produce substantial amounts of waste each year, a lot of which is contributed by the events we house.

  Through this priority, we are focused on climate and nature resilience, waste and circularity, and energy and water.

  Building inclusive, safe and equitable spaces

  Each year, we welcome millions of people through our doors and host an array of events as diverse as our visitors. Grounded in our value of Respect, it is important for our organisation and our venues to reflect this diversity in our workforce, our policy and our spaces.

  Creating lasting value for Victorian communities

  The events industry contributes $36Bn annually to the Australian economy. It enables people, businesses and industries to connect, share ideas and knowledge, and to build communities.

  The industry also brings challenges through labour practices, public safety and human rights. For Nyaal Banyul, these challenges are present in operating our venue, people we employ, events we host, and key supply categories.
